Hong Kong has been in the news this month… for several reasons. The G-7 leaders rebuked China for its treatment of Hong Kong’s autonomy and the freedom of its residents. International businesses have been leaving Hong Kong. And despite China’s ban, residents of Hong Kong observed the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

But why does Hong Kong receive so much media coverage? What is so special about Hong Kong and its history?

To better under the history of Hong Kong, we spoke with Professor Jeffrey Wasserstrom, a preeminent historian of modern China who is interested in connecting China’s past to its present… the kinda of thing we like to do!
