Cuba… two centuries of fighting for freedom.
Newsflash: Castro was really not a communist!
IN THE NEWS:
On July 11th, Cubans burst into open protest… a rare event in Cuba’s 60-year history under communism. Cuba’s courageous protests have fizzled out, undoubtedly due to the Cuban government’s crackdown. Many Cubans have been detained and sentenced after summary trials. Some were charged with broad offenses, others with more serious crimes.
President Biden has issued sanctions that target specific Cuban officials and elite forces. But Cuban Americans want more. They want the United States to intervene in Cuba with military force.
As Professor Lillian Guerra shared during our podcast conversation, the U.S. military has intervened in Cuba on multiple occasions, the outcomes of which were not necessarily positive for the Cuban people nor were they auspicious in the trajectory of Cuba’s history.
Professor Guerra is an award-winning scholar of Cuba’s history with many peer-reviewed publications on the subject, including three books. Her upcoming fourth book on Cuba is Patriots and Traitors in Cuba: Political Pedagogy, Rehabilitation and Vanguard Youth, 1961–1981.
