The lesson of “Don’t Create a Cabinet of Yes Men” is a big deal, especially now. President Washington’s cabinet was famously quarrelsome, with each entitled member able to truly lay claim to having played a significant role in the founding of our country. His first cabinet was composed of some the stars of Revolutionary America: Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of War Henry Knox, and Attorney General Edmund Randolph. And his vice president was none other than John Adams. Not only these men didn’t get along with each other, but on many matters they vehemently disagreed with the President. But the nation benefited from this. We need this more than ever now.
